Meeting Planners Reap the Rewards in Winnipeg’s Re-imagined Downtown
Winnipeg is midway through an urban renaissance with a re-visioning of its burgeoning downtown core — and meeting planners are already reaping the rewards. Phase I saw the expansion of the RBC Winnipeg Convention Centre. Opened one year ago, the centre added some 12, 170 sq. m. | 131,000 sq. ft. of meeting and exhibition space in a light-infused south building, bringing its total rentable meeting space up to 24,526 sq. m. | 264,000 sq. ft. The RBC Convention Centre anchors one quadrant of True North Square in Winnipeg’s SHED District, that includes office, retail and hotel accommodations. Last week, it was announced that the luxurious Sutton Place Hotel will break ground in spring, 2018.
“This is great news for downtown Winnipeg and wonderful news for the RBC Convention Centre,” said Klaus Lahr, President and CEO. “This new hotel has been the missing page from our expansion story and we’re excited this chapter is about to be written.”
Built just adjacent to the convention centre on the northwest corner of Carlton Street and St. Mary Avenue and attached by a climate-controlled walkway will be an 18-storey, 288 hotel room tower and a 13-storey, 130 residential tower. With a combined suite count of 418 units, the full-service hotel and residences is intended to reach completion in 2021.
These two Northland towers will complete the cutting-edge vision for True North Square and will feature flexible office space, retail shops and services, heated underground parking, direct access to public rapid transit transportation, a LEED Gold work environment, a breathtaking plaza and park, all only steps away from Winnipeg’s Bell MTS Place and the RBC Convention Centre.
Construction on True North Square’s other two towers is progressing on schedule. The buildings are rising at the rate of one floor every eight to 10 days, and the concrete structure is scheduled for top out by mid-November of this year. Installation of the high performance, triple-glazed curved glass curtain wall on Tower 1 (242 Hargrave) is scheduled to begin in September and will be completed by January 2018. True North is on schedule to deliver building occupancy for Tower 1 by June 29, 2018.
