Québec City Welcomes the World in 2018

FROM ROCKS TO ROBOTS, Québec City Welcomes the World in 2018

Québec City is rolling out the red carpet in 2018, hosting some 13 international and American conventions in subjects ranging from geography to geology, to robotics, and more. Central to Québec City winning the competition for many of these high-profile events is the team of volunteer ambassadors who promote Québec City as a smart choice for conferences and conventions to organizing committees around the world. All told, the 2018 conferences will spur over $23m in economic impact, including:

International Sedimentological Congress

A group of Québec City sedimentology researchers will host the 20th International Sedimentological Congress (ISC 2018) at the Québec City Convention Centre in 2018. More than 800 earth science specialists from around the world will convene in Québec City to discuss the latest advances in the broad field sedimentology. The Congress returns to Canada after a 36-year absence, having most recently been held on four continents—Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America.

Five days of oral and poster presentations, day excursions, and a series of field trips to Canadian and U.S. sites will take place both before and after the Congress. The expected 5,700 person-nights generated by the Congress at local hotels will have an impact on Québec City’s economy estimated at $3 million.

2018 International Geographical Union Regional Conference

Some 2,000 geographers from across the globe will gather in Québec City in 2018, due in part  to the region’s dynamic geography and for the area’s uniquely French culture.

“The society’s members from France, Belgium, Haiti and French-speaking African nations wanted French to play a crucial role in the 2018 event as homage to the society’s French history,” said Matthew G. Hatvany, Associate Professor of Geography at the Université Laval and member of Québec City’s Ambassador Club. “The Québec City team decided to re-emphasize the use of French in our bid presentation as well as the fact that Québec City symbolizes the crossroads between European culture and a North American mindset.” Hatvany’s instincts paid off when Québec City was announced, marking the first time the event has been held in North America in 25 years.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Graduates Meet in Québec City

More than 1,000 officer graduates from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, are set to hone their skills at the Québec City Convention Centre in 2018, at the annual FBI National Academy Associates (FBINAA) Training Conference and Exhibition.

Québec City’s nomination was presented to FBINAA’s Executive Board by the organization’s New York State and Eastern Canada chapter in collaboration with Sûreté du Québec and the Québec City Convention Centre. The chapter’s president deemed Québec City the destination of choice based on its European flair, unique attractions, high-quality conference facilities, and convenient location near the U.S.

“FBINAA’s decision to come to Québec City is a testament to the city’s exceptional reputation as a destination for business tourism and a boon for the region. The presence of no fewer than 1,000 member agents in Québec City over a five-day period in summer 2018 will generate over $2 million in economic spinoffs for the area,” enthused Québec City Convention Centre President and CEO, P.-Michel Bouchard.

The Robots are Coming!

Some 1,000 engineers from academia, government, and industry will gather in Québec City for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)’s International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers & Information in Engineering Conference (IDETC/CIE). Championed by Québec City Ambassador, Clement Gosselin, Director of the Université Laval Robotics Laboratory and holder of the Canada Research Chair in Robotics and Mechatronics, Gosselin convinced the American organization to choose Québec City for their event, which is expected to generate some $4.5m for the city.

Meetings and conventions take on a distinctly European flair when Québec City is on the agenda. The cradle of North American French culture, Québec City is a lively, living museum, and a leader in Life Sciences, ICT and AI industries. Learn more about meeting in Québec City, here.
